Google Photos is a cloud library. It backs up across devices, searches well, shares easily, and manages storage under your account. SpectraSort is an on-device picker for ranking, culling and taste, with no account at all. They do different jobs, and this page maps them out.
What Google Photos is built for
Google Photos is very good at what it's for: backing every photo up to the cloud, syncing across devices, search, and sharing. The design comes with strings, though. It needs a Google account, much of its AI runs on Google's servers rather than your phone, and storage past the free allowance means a Google One subscription.
Like Apple Photos, it's a library. It browses and stores. It won't rank a trip best-first, learn which frames you keep, or walk you through a cull.

The privacy difference, in plain terms
For Google Photos to search and organize your library, your photos have to be in Google's cloud, attached to your account. For a backup service that's a reasonable trade. SpectraSort doesn't ask for the trade: the index, the scores and the taste profile are computed and stored on the phone, and nothing about your library leaves it. How that works →
